Do I need Mexican Car Insurance when visiting Rocky Point?

While some U.S. insurance companies do extend their comprehensive and collision coverage into Mexico, none of these offers Liability coverage in Mexico, which is required by law. You can purchase Mexican Insurance online prior to travel, as well as over the phone or at numerous spots along the drive down (for example in Ajo, Why, or at the gas station in Lukeville just before crossing). You do not need a vehicle permit for travel to Rocky Point though you will need to have: valid Mexican insurance for the period of your stay, car registration, valid driver’s license.


What documents do I need to get when traveling to RP?

If you are traveling to Rocky Point and are older than 16 years old you need to make sure that you have either a Passport Card or official Passport if you want to be allowed to re enter the United States. It is also a good idea to bring your drivers license with you when traveling to Mexico.

If you have any children traveling with you that are under 16, they are able to present their original, or a copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship.

These documents aren’t important for getting into Mexico, as they are 100% necessary for U.S. citizens to get back into the country.


What are the border crossing times?

The border is closed from 12am – 6am, so you are free to cross at any time around those hours. Also be aware that wait times at the border vary and increase immensely with the holidays, so give get on the road early if you do not want to be waiting for several hours at the border.


Where can I buy groceries while I am down there?

If you would like to buy groceries as soon as you get to Rocky Point, your best bet is to go to Sams Club which is along the main road right next to Bodega Aurrera and across from Super Santa Fe and Domino’s Pizza.

If you by chance miss Sams Club, or do not have a membership, there is a Super Ley once you drive a little further into town and you will find it on the road that is called Constitucion. If you are coming from Sandy Beach and would like to get to Super Ley you are going to take 26th road, which will take you from the resorts into town until you find Constitucion and make a right.


What if we have car trouble on the Mexican highway?

Do we need to exchange dollars for pesos in Rocky Point?

No, U.S. dollars are welcome everywhere.


Can we use credit cards?

Yes, most hotels, restaurants and businesses accept credit cards. We suggest notifying your credit card company that you will be using your card in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. But cash is accepted everywhere and is recommended as many restaurants and bars do not allow gratuities to be added to credit card purchases.


Do cell phones work in Rocky Point?

Most cell phones do work here in Puerto Penasco, aka Rocky Point, Mexico. You might need to add an International Calling feature on some services to keep costs in check. We recommend you check with your cell phone provider.
